Too many things are happening in Bratislava these days! In May, my favorite month, there is no weekend without a single event and after checking out this list, you will have difficulties to choose your favorite thing! Happy reading :)
30.4. – 2.5.
This Bratislava open air festival is held for the 8th time already. Its visitors at Tyrsovo nabrezie (Danube embankment near the UFO tower – or Magio beach in summer) will be able to enjoy concerts, a creative market, fireworks or watch illustrations of non-traditional sports. Everything free or charge! During all 3 days there will be a so-called “Majovy dzem” which is a hand-made market organized among the trees at Tyrsovo embankment for all those who are creative and create something hand-made: from sewing, painting, knitting to working in studios. Bring your picnic basket, a blanket and some snacks and be creative! On Saturday from 10am to 7pm you will be also able to jump on a boat and cruise on Danube between the Old Town and Petrzalka parts of Bratislava. If you want to see the fireworks with ambient music in the background inspired by one of Strauss’ famous waltzes, make sure you are ready at 9.50pm on Saturday. KAPITULSKA STREET OPEN DAYS
The oldest street of Bratislava which is near the castle walls and St. Martin’s Cathedral will come to life on the 1st May. Starting 10am, you can be part of a continuous cultural and artistic program (theater, singing, music), have a look to the usually locked houses and gardens, join a sightseeing tour on our special historical train Vlacik Presporacik, and there will be activities for children as well – various creative workshops.
On the first day of May, tens of models will be walking through the streets of Bratislava’s Old Town. Live music, celebrities from the world of fashion, music and theater scene, and a lot of fun! The whole event will kick off at 6pm at KC Dunaj and will follow this route: KC Dunaj – Michalska str. – Imperia Design – Hviezdoslav’s square – Main square – Laurinska str. – Slowatch – KC Dunaj. MEDIEVAL KNIGHTS SHOW AT THE DEVIN CASTLE
On Sunday there will be an all day event held at the Devin castle that will take you back to the Middle Ages – the times of knights, ladies and troubadours. A great show for (not only) kids will include the official opening of Devin castle to public at 10am, opening ceremonial of the knights show at 11am, and will continue with a rich program during the day – contemporary dances, fairy-tale performances or showcase of swordsmanship for example. At 4.30pm you can watch the knight tournament which is one of the main points of the program. The event be held until 6pm. Basic fee 6 €, discounted fee 4€, family ticket 10 €.
FESTIVAL OF MASCOTS IN BRATISLAVA ZOO
On Sunday, May the 10th, the Bratislava ZOO will host over 50 characters of various animals, mascots and characters representing popular fairy-tales. Children will be able to take a picture, play or dance with them or take part in a „mascot march.“ Music performances, mini party, creative workshops, face painting and other attractions are included in the program. You can buy a ticket in advance, daily in the ZOO from 9am to 6pm, until May 9th, to be able to use a special entrance on the day of the festival. Children ticket costs 3 €, adults will pay 4,50 € per head. If you are a family, you can get the family ticket (2 adults + 2 children) for 13,50 €.
ADRENALIN FILM FESTIVAL
13.5. – 16.5.
The spring edition of this film festival will bring a selection of the best movies related to bike, surfing, windsurfing, skateboarding and fixed gear. The festival will be divided into thematic blocks and the movies will be screened at 3 different venues. Have a look at the whole program, trailers and other details here.
FLOWER POWER PARTY
Do you like hippie/flower style? Do you wish you were born in the late 60ies or early 70ies? Then you don’t want to miss this event! Welcome drinks, sweets, flag stickers for each nationality, flower garlands for girls, special deals on drinks during the whole night, free henna paint, a midnight raffle and a lot more. EXCLUSIVE NETWORKING WITH INTERNATIONS
The monthly event of InterNations, a community gathering expats living in Bratislava as well as locals. You can join at the stylish venue of Bratislava’s Sheraton hotel for a fun evening of meeting internationally minded people, mingling and dancing. Enjoy networking and making new friends with an ice breaker game! Every attendee will get a welcome drink, participate in a midnight raffle and there are some other surprises in store for you! FOOD REVOLUTION DAY
Food Revolution Day is a challenge for nurseries, schools, organizations, companies, communities or individuals to dedicate their time and attention on this day (as well as other days) to ingredients and food they are eating, to share their experience with others, share recipes or tips how to eat healthier and be more responsible about the food. There will be regular farmer’s market accompanying the Food Revolution Day program on Saturday at Stará Tržnica (Old Town Market) and all around Slovakia. It will include different activities for children and grown-ups. The main theme will be an all-day discussion board about school catering. ONE DAY TRIP TO LEDNICE & VALTICE CASTLE WITH WINE TASTING
Visit two beautiful castles in this part of Europe – Lednice and Valtice – which are under UNESCO. Taste some quality wines in special wine cellars and spend a whole day with other open minded people! NIGHT OF MUSEUMS AND GALLERIES
Bratislava museums and galleries will open their doors and „hidden chambers“ to public on Saturday, 16th May. The visitors will be able to visit them until late night hours and admire all the exhibitions. You only need to pay a one-time fee (2 €) in the first institution and will be able to enter all the museums/galleries on the list. Children up to 6 years have free entry. With your ticket, you can also have a free ride on the special train „Vlacik Blavacik“ from 11am to 10pm – trains will run each hour on this circle: Slovak National Museum Vajanského nábrežie – Slovak National Gallery Rázusovo nábrežie – Museum at Žižkova ulica – Castle – Hotel IBIS – Stará tržnica (Old Market Hall) – Slovak National Museum Vajanského nábrežie.
Special program will be prepared in Berlinka (the cafe of the Slovak National Gallery): from 10am until midnight, you will have a chance to buy books for symbolic prices at the book bazaar. From 2.30pm there will be creative workshops for children and their parents lasting 2 hours. Accompanying program for the whole day will include introductions to current exhibitions, photo exhibitions, discussions, music performances and more. ONE DAY JAZZ FESTIVAL
21.5. – 22.5.
If you like jazz, you might want to get a ticket to this festival that will take place in Istropolis. So far it was always held only during 1 day (hence its title), but as this is its 10th year, the organizers prepared 2 days of rich program for you. Ticket for one day will cost you 20-35 €, a permanent one for both days 40-60 €. You can buy them here.
SLOVAK FOOD FESTIVAL
21.5. – 24.5.
The biggest picnic in town – this is what this annual event regularly held at the Bratislava castle is called. Free entry for everybody makes it a must-see place if you happen to visit this city at the end of May. You will watch chefs and cooks preparing the food on the spot in front of your eyes, taste specialties and drinks from not only Slovak cuisine, enjoy concerts and if you have kids, they can play in the children zones as well. 22.5. – 24.5.
Circul’art is an international event of contemporary theater and circus. It combines theater, acrobatics, circus and street arts in a modern family event.This festival will take place in the Medical garden and offer different shows during 3 days. Check the detailed performances and tickets here.
What is your favorite burger place in Bratislava? You don’t have one yet? Now you have a chance to try burgers from different restaurants at one place! Chosen restaurants, bistros and other vendors famous for good quality ingredients will present their signature burgers in a degustation size. RAW FOOD FEST
The largest festival of raw food is going to take place on the roof of Central shopping center during the third weekend of May and you can join free of charge! For more info check their official Facebook event where the organizers promise to post details.
WEEK OF ARCHITECTURE AND DESIGN
25.5. – 31.5.
An annual festival celebrating architecture, design, art and creative wealth. Presentations, lectures, exhibitions, seminars, music, events, workshops and discussions that address key issues in terms of architecture and design – all these will be included on the “menu.” Check the whole program here. One part of this festival is a so-called Urban Market which will be held from 29th to 31th May. Urban Market is for the creative souls – quality and fashion items, accessories, jewelry and other designer pieces will be sold there. The location of this market will be announced on their Facebook page.
Are you a fan of passionate melodies, temper and unforgettable performances? Can you imagine being at a concert full of guitar playing and rhytmic sounds somewhere in Andalusia? Good news – you can and you don’t need to fly anywhere! Four famous musicians grouped under the name Ultra High Flamenco are going to perform in Bratislava and there is a special offer for a limited number of lucky people! More info HERE.

This venue opened just a few months ago and is already becoming one of the most popular spots in the city. During this event you will also enjoy some live music by an incredible cover band. BAZAAR AT THE DEVIN CASTLE
This regular bazaar is focused on art, crafts and vintage. It is held from April to September – each last Sunday of the month. The rich program includes theater performances for children starting at 11am. Please note that dogs are forbidden in the whole area. You need to buy a ticket (4 €) which allows you to enter the Devin Castle as well. Seniors and children pay only 2 €.
YOGA IN ENGLISH LANGUAGE
A regular yoga session in English language is held each Tuesday in Centrum Radosť from 8pm. Something for those who aim to be stronger, more flexible, obtain balance and have some fun times. Voluntary contribution to the lecturer! More info here.
