LEPSI SVET GALLERY

An extra ordinary gallery – and not only because of its look a lá cute living room. The main reason is that by purchasing even the smallest item you support people with intellectual disabilities, who are also contributors to the exposition. Maybe the place to look for your perfect souvenir! Its center location and zero entry fee make it easy to stop by anytime – at least for the feeling of making a good deed :)

LOCATION

You can walk to the Lepší svet gallery from the Presidential Palace – it is only 2 minutes away. Follow the narrow sidewalk near a busy main road. The gallery has a small entrance door you but will find it easily if you remember that it is opposite to the Hotel Tatra which is across the road.

WHAT TO SEE IN THE LEPSI SVET GALLERY?

The moment you walk in, you will think “wow, is this really a gallery?” It reminds me of a small living room which also serves as a gift shop – almost everything you see can be purchased. Nothing like an ordinary gallery :)

It sells works of art created by Slovak and foreign artists, as well as works made by people with a mental handicap. The exposition changes each month which means you will find works of different artists here almost each time you walk in.

As I mentioned before, you can buy various items in Lepší svet gallery. There are colorful paintings, postcards, photo frames, ceramic dishes, figures and other hand-made accessories. They are exposed all over the place. Each item has a price tag attached for people’s better orientation.

You can buy various souvenirs in this gallery, too   Many of the works are created by people with a mental handicap

The most important and nicest thing about this place is that whatever you buy here, you will automatically support people with intellectual disabilities in Slovakia. Funds from the gallery are sent to an NGO which holds the same name – and its literal translation is “a better world.” It was created in 2003 with the purpose of integrating heavily disabled people into everyday life. That’s also the reason why these people create works and donate them to the gallery. Yes, I said donate. Each piece exposed here is an original donated by its author.

My visit was in a later afternoon but I was told that usually in the mornings people come to create their work here – so if you are lucky, you can watch building up a work of art in real time :)

Colorful postcards are also avilable for purchasing   If you are lucky, you can watch building up a work of art in real time :)
