The healthiest restaurant of Bratislava. This is one name of Mercado, certainly because of its bio, organic and always fresh meals. Something both for vegetarian and meat lovers, but also for those who are on a gluten-free or lactose-free diet. Its perfect location near the Danube bank makes it a very popular spot for locals as well as tourists. Definitely one of the top restaurants of our city.
This restaurant is located on the promenade of Eurovea, one of our most popular shopping malls, overlooking the Danube river. A great location just a few minutes walk from the Old Town. There is a covered terrace which operates the whole year, and an outdoor terrace which is open during the summer only. This is the view from the restaurant you get when sitting by its windows:
Mercado has a very interesting concept of its decor. Wood and natural material dominates the inside part. There is a living wall with various herbs and flowers which was certainly an original idea to implement. In the central part there are shelves with bottles of fresh syrups, veggies of local production and wines.
The interior is beautifully arranged and you feel very cozy here.
WHAT TO HAVE IN MERCADO?
Mercado is known for its modern international cuisine with menu which is varied and has interesting taste combinations. Fantastic meals both for vegetarian and meat lovers, but also healthy bio food, gluten-free and lactose-free meals. Additionally, each meal is rated with a special sign on lactose, gluten and veg – which can be useful if you are a conscious eater or are on a special diet. Traditional syrups, lemonades, fresh juices and smoothies are super delicious. My big recommendation is to try the pear & grape lemonade – it is absolutely fantastic! From the syrup drinks, the blackberry and cornelian cherry with mint is my number one.
There is quite a long list of iced coffees and home-made ice teas as well. My boyfriend fell for the iced moccachino and iced frappe, I tried the aloe & lime ice tea and can only talk nicely about it. Full of flavours.
Mercado calls itself the healthiest restaurant in Bratislava. You have a choice to pick something from the Mediterranean, Oriental or Asian cuisine, as well as try some street food, local meals, pasta, risottos or salads. The falafel with hummus & baba ghanouj dip is a great small light meal. The pumpkin risotto made from natural rise with pumpkin seeds, sage dressing and lime zest was a super delicious treat which I recommend for all the veggie people out there :)
Fresh ingredients and organic products are the motto of this restaurant. One of the meals I have put on my “regular-meals-to-have” is the salad with marinated duck, quinoa, roasted pumpkin, sprouts, grapefruit pulp and citrus dressing. I can’t even describe how tasty it was. Probably my number one meal in Mercado so far. The only thing I would not order again was the penne with basil pesto, cherry tomatoes, rucola and Parmesan. The pesto did not taste like a standard pesto, it was just OK, nothing special. Maybe just a matter of personal taste.
Now when it comes to the dessert menu, there are only a few things to pick from. However, never mind, as the only thing you need to know about this dessert menu is that Mercado has the very best carrot cake with pecan nuts, served with a coconut pudding. Indeed the best carrot cake I have ever tried! Maybe it’s the combination of the cake, cream and pudding (which I had not seen before), I don’t know. One thing I know for sure is that you will come back for this cake once you try it :)
I also tried the „healthy“ desserts – the oatmeal pie with caramel & peach espuma („mousse“) was OK but let’s face one fact – after having tried that delicious carrot cake, no healthy pie is gonna beat that taste J If you want to go with a healthy version of a sweet treat, I would recommend to have the buckwheat créme brulée with seasonal fruit preserves and organic frozen yoghurt instead.A fantastic combination and a smooth, delicious taste.
An important thing about Mercado is also that the personnel is always very friendly and helpful, the chill out music is perfect and adds to the relaxed ambience of the place. A great spot for lazy Sunday afternoons or a relaxed lunch after a shopping spree in the shopping mall :) By the way, if you come with children, it might be essential to know that there is a nice children corner with mini kitchen available for those little ones :)
