Gallery of Slovak modern art in one of the most beautiful buildings of this type in Slovakia. By visiting this place you gain the opportunity to become acquainted with the works of major artists formed in Slovakia since the late 19th century till the present. There are mostly paintings but you can also find sculpture and graphics art. The main things to see are the 4 permanent exhibitions, each on a different floor.
Nedbalka Gallery is situated in the city center at Nedbalova street 17 – a few minutes walk from the Main square (Hlavné námestie). It is a narrow street and the gallery is in the middle of it.
After entering, you get to a small reception from where there are doors to the ground floor temporary exhibition which changes regularly. To see the permanent exhibitions, you need to take the stairs or elevator. We recommend to take the stairs as each floor has its magic – welcoming you with a uniquely painted elevator wall!
WHAT TO SEE IN THE NEDBALKA GALLERY?
1ST FLOOR: PERSONALITIES AND PHENOMENA
After taking the stairs to the first floor, you will see this yellow wall which at the first sight looks like an ordinary wall but when you look better, you can see it is an elevator door. On this floor there is also a nice cosy cafe which is a great last touch after seeing all the exhibitions, having a coffee as you leave :)
The exhibition will be on your right side – a big circle hole will appear in the middle of the room with small statues around it. Look up and down the „hole“ and you will see each floor – a great view!
The permanent exhibition presents the most prominent artists from this period contained in the collections of Nedbalka Gallery.
The artists differ by ideological attitude and style of painting but are commonly characterized by creativity, artistic quality and uniqueness; and the works come from artists across several generations.
2ND FLOOR: THE GALANDA GROUP
The second floor will welcome you with a red elevator wall with two naked people – reflecting Adam and Eve.
This exhibition is all about late modern art. Its representatives deliberately promoted interwar modern art.
Yet, the nature of their works was shaped by their individual life experience, mentality, skills and personal dispositions.
3RD FLOOR: SLOVAK MODERN ART
The next exhibition is from the modern art period which had a huge impact on the life of artists and is displayed in their works.
You can find bigger statues in the main room and have a beautiful view on the floors above and under you :)
4TH FLOOR: TURN OF THE CENTURY
Beginnings of modern art in Slovakia are displayed on the top floor of the gallery.
The view from here is the best – look down through the „hole“ and you will have a great spiral view on all the floors under you.
Scenes from the everyday life of townsmen in a naturalistic manner is what you mostly get to see on the paintings.
The Nedbalka Gallery has a collection of more than 500 works of Slovak fine arts from the late nineteenth century to the present. It was built over a very short period of a few years only – it operates since 2012. It is one of the most beautiful galleries you can see in Bratislava :)
